Saturday Morning Conversations
Recently Jean and Chuck downsized from a 24' Winnebago C-Class to a 21' Road Trek.
Why?
"We live in an apartment house where parking a larger RV was a problem. There was no easy access to power and water. Cleaning the Winnebago was not easy. I will soon be 80; my confidence driving a larger RV is not as high as it once was. I like the idea that we can park in a regular size parking space when we stop at a restaurant. This Road Trek is very easy to operate. We have some concerns about towing our car with the Road Trek. It has a 283 HP, 350 cubic inch Chevy engine, so it should have enough power, but our concerns are about the Gross Vehicle Weight limit. I think it will be OK but I still have some research to do, so that I can be sure..."
Ray, we haven't seen you since the May Campout at Ft. Chiswell.
What have you been up to?
"Well, after the campout at Ft. Chiswell, I began to hear a knock in my engine. I did some diagnosis and consulted with some of my fellow Classic GMC Coach owners and realized that I was going to have to rebuild my engine. This would be the fourth time since I have owned the coach (23 years). At 82, I was thinking that this might be the last time.
I made all the necessary preparations and began removing the engine from the coach. All was going smoothly until my chain fall broke and dropped it onto the concrete floor of the pit, breaking the engine block and transmission casing. I was very lucky that I wasn't standing under it at the time. All of this meant that, now I had to find another engine, not just rebuild the old one.
I found an engine in Atlanta, drove down to pick it up and brought it home to rebuild that one. With the help of a machine shop in Bristol, I finally got the engine back together and installed it in the coach. Toward the end of October, I got the coach back on the road for a long test drive. Everything went pretty well and I am now making plans to go to Winter Haven, FL in December.
Joe, inquiring minds want to know. What motivated you to trade the Georgetown for the Discovery Diesel Pusher?
"I've just had this wild hair for a diesel pusher for a long time now. When Ray and Barb passed me going up the mountain, on the way home from Rutledge Lake, I knew right then that the Georgetown was a gonner. The Discovery will fulfill my needs very nicely now and in the future. I am very pleased with it."
